West and east Chula Vista are different places to grow old
West of I-805, many homes were built from the 1950s through the 1970s: single-story houses on small lots around Third Avenue, Broadway, and the streets between. No stairs is a big advantage for someone using a walker. The trade-offs are narrow hallways, small bathrooms with a tub-and-shower combination, and sometimes a step down into the family room.
East of I-805, Rancho del Rey, Otay Ranch, and Eastlake were mostly built from the late 1980s on. Many of those homes are two stories, with every bedroom upstairs. When stairs become the problem, families usually choose between moving a bed downstairs, putting in a stair lift, or having a caregiver there for every trip up and down.
We look at the house during the free in-home consultation and tell you what we’d change first. In a west-side home it’s often the tub. In an east-side home it’s usually the stairs.
Coming home from Sharp Chula Vista or Scripps Mercy Chula Vista
Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center and Scripps Mercy Hospital Chula Vista are the city’s two hospitals. Both have case managers who plan discharges. Ask for the case manager by name, and ask early in the stay, not on the morning your parent is being sent home.

Help for older adults in Chula Vista
- Norman Park Senior Center, 270 F Street. The city’s main senior center: classes, tai chi, bridge, dancing, and a fitness room.
- St. Paul’s PACE in Chula Vista. An all-inclusive program for people 55 and older who qualify for nursing-home-level care. It covers medical care, a day center, and transportation.
- Glenner Alzheimer’s Family Centers. Runs an adult day program in Chula Vista for people living with dementia.
- Salvation Army Chula Vista Corps. Senior programs and a nutrition program for adults 60 and older.
Adult day programs and home care work well together: a day program three days a week, and a caregiver at home for mornings, evenings, or the other days.
Language and culture
