Much of Del Mar is built into the hillside east of Camino del Mar, with narrow, winding streets, homes set above or below the road, and outdoor steps to the front door. Those steps are often the first thing that gets hard, and a fall outside is harder to hear than one inside.
A caregiver helps with the parts of the day that involve stairs and getting out: bringing in groceries, walking down to the car, and going along on errands and appointments.
Fair season and racing season
Every summer, the San Diego County Fair and then the horse racing season at the Del Mar Fairgrounds bring heavy traffic to Via de la Valle, Jimmy Durante Boulevard, and I-5. Caregivers plan extra travel time on those days. If your parent has appointments in summer, schedule them early in the day when you can.
Del Mar Community Connections
Del Mar has an unusually good local resource for older residents. Del Mar Community Connections, a nonprofit at 225 Ninth Street, helps seniors keep living in their own homes. Its volunteers drive residents to the grocery store and medical appointments, it lends medical equipment, and it runs social programs like book club, bridge, and brain-fitness classes.
Home care fills the gaps those programs don’t cover: hands-on help with bathing and dressing, meals on the days no one visits, and someone there after a hospital stay.

Del Mar residents usually go to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla or Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas. Both are about 15 minutes away on I-5.

We’re a separate business, but the two fit together. Many Del Mar families use volunteer rides and social programs from Del Mar Community Connections, and a caregiver from us for hands-on care at home.
Will summer traffic make caregivers late?
We plan around fair and racing season with extra travel time. If a caregiver is running late, the family and our office hear about it before the shift is supposed to start.
