Home care in Otay Ranch

Otay Ranch has been built in stages since the late 1990s, and building is still going on. It is organized into villages, and they aren’t all alike. Windingwalk mixes single-family houses with condos and townhomes. Millenia is laid out like a small city center, with blocks of townhomes, condos, and apartments beside Otay Ranch Town Center. Escaya, one of the newer villages, began selling homes in 2017.

That range changes what care looks like. In a two-story house, the question is usually the stairs and an upstairs bathroom. In a townhome, there may be three floors, with the garage at the bottom and the bedrooms at the top. In a condo or apartment, it’s the elevator, the walk from parking, and where a caregiver can leave a car.

Newer homes help in some ways. Hallways tend to be wider, and there is often a walk-in shower somewhere in the house. But a new house isn’t automatically an easy one to grow old in. A walk-in shower with a glass door and no grab bar is still a hard place to fall.

• Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center and Scripps Mercy Hospital Chula Vista are the closest hospitals.
• Kaiser Permanente members are usually admitted farther north, at Kaiser’s San Diego Medical Center on Clairemont Mesa Boulevard or at Zion Medical Center. Plan for a longer ride home, and for follow-up visits back up the freeway.
• Otay Ranch Town Center, at Olympic Parkway and Eastlake Parkway, has the Otay Ranch Branch Library inside it. It makes an easy, flat outing with places to sit.
• Norman Park Senior Center, on F Street, is the city’s main senior center. It’s across town on the west side, so for most Otay Ranch seniors it’s an outing that needs a ride.
