Home care in Poway

Poway calls itself “the City in the Country,” and it earns the name: ranch homes, horse properties, and hills. For an older adult, that means space and quiet, and also long drives, big yards, and a real wildfire risk.

Ranch homes and rural lots

Many Poway homes are single-story ranch houses, which helps with walkers and wheelchairs. The challenges are the lot and the distance. Large yards, long driveways, and roads without sidewalks mean that once your parent stops driving, getting groceries and prescriptions depends on someone else.

Wildfire and evacuation planning

Parts of Poway sit in high fire-risk areas, and the city has been evacuated before, including during the 2007 Witch Creek fire. For someone who doesn’t drive, uses a walker, or has dementia, an evacuation needs a plan made in advance, not in the middle of the night.

  • Sign your parent’s phone, and yours, up for AlertSanDiego, the county’s emergency alert system
  • Decide who picks your parent up if an evacuation order comes, and have a backup
  • Keep a go-bag by the door: medications for a week, a medication list, glasses, hearing aids and chargers, and copies of insurance cards
  • Write the plan into the care plan, so the caregiver on shift knows what to do

Coming home from Palomar Medical Center Poway

Palomar Medical Center Poway, on Pomerado Road, is the city’s hospital. Next to it is The Villas at Poway, a skilled nursing facility where many patients go for rehab after a hospital stay. Coming home from rehab is its own transition: your parent may be stronger than when they left the hospital, but not yet ready to be alone all day.

Plan for more hours the first week home from rehab, then taper. See post-surgery and hospital-to-home care.

Getting out

Lake Poway has a paved area near the entrance with benches and water views, which makes for a good outing with a caregiver. For someone who can’t walk far, a drive and lunch can matter just as much. See companion care.

Common questions

What happens if there’s an evacuation during a caregiver’s shift?

The caregiver follows the evacuation plan in the care plan and stays in touch with the family and our office. That’s why we write the plan down before it’s needed.

Can you help after my father comes home from The Villas at Poway?

Yes. Call before his discharge date from rehab, so a caregiver is ready for the first days home.
