Poway homes are mostly single-story, which is the best thing that can happen to someone recovering from surgery. The distances are the problem: long driveways, no sidewalks, and neighbours too far away to hear a call for help.

Home from the hospital, or home from rehab
Palomar Medical Center Poway, on Pomerado Road, is the local hospital. Next door, The Villas at Poway takes many patients for skilled nursing rehab after a hospital stay. Those are two different homecomings.
Straight home from hospital, your father arrives sore, slow, and on new medication, and the first 72 hours are the risky ones. Home after a fortnight in rehab, he arrives stronger and more confident, which brings its own risk: he has been walking on flat corridors with handrails and a call button, and he is about to try the same thing on a gravel path with nobody watching.
Either way, call us when the discharge date is set rather than after it. Plan more hours in the first week and taper as the physical therapist’s exercises take hold.
Single-story helps. Distance doesn’t.
No stairs removes the biggest obstacle to recovering at home. What replaces it in Poway is everything outside the front door.
- The mailbox at the end of a long or sloped drive, which is where people fall while feeling better
- A gravel or dirt path between the house and the car, hard work with a walker
- Bins that have to go to the road, usually at dusk
- No sidewalks, so the physical therapist’s "walk a little further each day" has to happen in the house or on the drive
- Neighbours far enough away that a fall in the yard goes unnoticed
What the first week needs
A caregiver in the house covers the parts that go wrong quietly: fluids, meals that get eaten rather than made, help to the bathroom at night, and keeping the medication list straight when the hospital’s version and the cupboard’s version disagree.
They also drive. Follow-up appointments come thick in the first fortnight, and they are 20 to 30 minutes away for most Poway addresses. Someone who cannot yet get in and out of a car alone cannot get to them alone.
Recovering during fire season
Recovery and evacuation orders don’t coordinate. Someone who has just had a hip replaced cannot pack a car quickly, and may not be able to drive at all for weeks. If your father is recovering between roughly May and November, write the evacuation plan into the care plan: who collects him, where they go, and a go-bag with a week of medication, the medication list, glasses, and chargers. Common questions
My father is going to The Villas for rehab first. When should I call you?
While he’s still in rehab, as soon as there’s a discharge date. We can do the consultation at the house, see what the walker will actually have to cope with, and have a caregiver there the day he comes home.
Can a caregiver change his dressing or give injections?
No. That’s medical work and it comes from a home health nurse, usually covered by Medicare after a hospital stay. Our caregivers handle bathing, dressing, meals, walking, and driving, and report anything that looks wrong with a wound.
