Home care in La Jolla

La Jolla homes come with views, and with stairs. On Mount Soledad, in the Muirlands, and along the hillsides above the Shores, many houses are built on several levels. That’s the main thing that decides whether an older adult can keep living in one safely.

Hillside homes and split levels

In a lot of La Jolla homes, the bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen are on different levels, a few steps apart or a full flight apart. Driveways can be steep, and the front door may be a set of steps up from the street. Closer to the Village and Bird Rock, older cottages and condos are flatter but smaller, often with tight bathrooms.

Before a planned surgery, or when balance starts to slip, count the steps between the bed, the bathroom, and the kitchen. That number usually tells you whether your parent needs someone there for part of the day, or for nights too.

Discharge from Scripps La Jolla, Jacobs, or Scripps Green

La Jolla residents are close to three major hospitals: Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, UC San Diego Health’s Jacobs Medical Center, and Scripps Green Hospital near Torrey Pines. Many planned joint replacements and heart procedures happen at these hospitals, and patients often go home within a few days.

Coming home to a multi-level house after a hip or knee replacement is where falls happen. Ask the case manager about stairs before discharge, and plan the first week around the level with the bathroom. See post-surgery care.

Resources in La Jolla

  • La Jolla Community Center, 6811 La Jolla Boulevard. A nonprofit with classes for adults and seniors: bridge, yoga, languages, computer skills, and talks on brain health.
  • Shiley-Marcos Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center at UC San Diego. For families interested in memory research, clinical trials, and education about dementia.
  • The beach walks. The flat stretch along La Jolla Shores is one of the best places in the county for a slow walk with a caregiver.

Parking and getting to you

Street parking in the Village and near the beaches is tight, especially on summer weekends. If your parent’s home has room in the driveway or a garage spot a caregiver can use, tell us. It makes on-time arrivals much more reliable.

Common questions

My mother’s bedroom is two flights up from the kitchen. Can she stay?

Often, yes, with a plan. Options include moving her bedroom to the main level, a stair lift, or a caregiver there for the trips she can’t make safely alone. We’ll look at the house during the consultation and tell you what we’d do.

Is La Jolla too far from your office?

No. La Jolla is about 30 minutes from our office, and it’s one of the communities we serve.
