The spouse who does everything

The pattern is familiar. One of them declines, the other absorbs it. They stop going out because it’s too much to arrange. They stop going to their own appointments. They start sleeping badly because they are listening for movement at night. Nobody outside the house notices for a long time, because the person doing the caring answers "we’re managing" when asked.

The warning signs worth acting on: the carer losing weight, missing their own medical appointments, snapping at a spouse they’ve never snapped at, or saying they can’t leave the house even for an hour. Respite is the cheapest intervention in home care, and the one families delay longest.

What four hours actually buys

Our minimum visit is four hours, which is more useful than it sounds. In that time, the person who usually does the caring can:

  • Go to their own doctor or dentist, which is the appointment that gets cancelled most
  • Do a full grocery run at the centre on Eastlake Parkway instead of a rushed one
  • Sleep. A nap without listening for footsteps is worth more than most outings
  • See friends, go to church, or get a haircut, without watching the clock
  • Sit in the house doing nothing while someone else is responsible for a few hours

While they’re out, the caregiver isn’t just supervising. They do the bathing, the lunch, the walk, and the laundry, so the afternoon doesn’t arrive as a backlog.

Overnight, a weekend, or a week

Longer respite covers the things families otherwise turn down: a grandchild’s wedding out of state, a knee replacement for the carer, or a week away that they haven’t taken in years. Cover can run overnight, for a weekend, or for a full week with caregivers rotating through.

These bookings need lead time, and the care plan has to be much more detailed than for a four-hour visit: medications, night routines, what your father eats, what upsets him, who to call.

Overnight and week-long cover is billed either by the hour or as live-in days, depending on how it is staffed. Give us the dates and we’ll quote it both ways.

How do we start without it feeling like a big commitment?

Most families book one four-hour visit a week at a fixed time. It gives the person receiving care a chance to get used to a face, and it gives the carer a reliable block rather than a favour they have to ask for.

My husband won’t agree to "a carer". How do I raise it?

Frame it around you rather than him: you have an appointment, and someone is coming to help with the house while you’re out. Many people accept help with cooking and cleaning long before they accept help with themselves, and the rest follows once the face is familiar.
